Turner Prize 2010 - Tate Britain
The Turner Prize exhibition features the works of four shortlisted British artists. It goes on display for two months before the prize is awarded.Established in 1984 to draw greater public attention to contemporary art, the Turner Prize has both reflected and informed the popular reception of new British art in this country and internationally.
Each year a specialist jury has shortlisted some of the most important artists working today, and made the difficult decision to award the Prize to one of them, causing annual controversy and debate.
The judges for the Turner Prize 2010 are Isabel Carlos, Andrew Nairne and Polly Staple.
ShortList:
* Dexter Dalwood – for work inspired by historical and contemporary political events Dexter Dalwood, 49, who paints scenes of well-known deaths such as those of rocker Kurt Cobain and British scientist David Kelly.
* Angela De La Cruz – Produces sculptures made from overstretched painted canvasses
* Susan Philipsz – for her sound art installations in various settings Glaswegian Susan Philipsz, 44, plays "melancholy" recordings of her warbling in public places.
* The Otolith Group – for their thought-provoking film art - London's Anjalika Sagar, 42, and Kodwo Eshun, 44.
The launch of the exhibition comes just days after former winners of the Turner Prize were among artists who have written an open letter to the Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt complaining about cuts to arts funding.
David Hockney, Tracey Emin and Anish Kapoor are just some of the names who warn the Government the cutbacks risk destroying the country's "remarkable and fertile landscape of culture and creativity".
The winner of the Turner Prize 2010 will be announced 6 December 2010.
