Ai Weiwei Rocks As New Album Gets Global Release

Ai Weiwei

The Chinese dissident artist Ai Weiwei, is about to release his first hard rock album. The recording will be available as both a CD and as an iTunes download. Mr Ai has been busy preparing the packaging which he has designed himself.  Here is a first look at the cover artwork.

The artist declared that he was not a hard rock fan and said. “My favourite band will be myself,” “I don’t play instruments, I sing and I wrote the songs. It’s about my condition and China’s condition.” The music, is a collaboration composed with a friend. It was reported that it is in the process of being mixed and will be released in the next two months.

The artist who famously brought us Gangnam Style (in handcuffs) a protest remash of the number one hit song and YouTube video sensation, which was a global hit last autumn, will now be producing his own original material.

Ai Weiwei  was born in 1957 in Beijing, China, where he lives and works. He is one of the most widely known and outspoken Chinese artists working today. Known for his social or performance-based interventions as well as object-based artworks, he employs metaphorical references, humour and political irony in his work. He is best known for his collaboration on the ‘Birds Nest Stadium’ for the Beijing Olympics in 2008. He returned to work on the design of the 2012 Serpentine Pavilion with Herzog & de Meuron the original team which produced the ‘Birds Nest’.Working in disciplines ranging from sculpture, photography to multimedia video installation, there seems to be no stopping the output of Mr Ai’s innovative creative force.
