A new private Berlin museum designed by the British architect John Pawson will be the setting for the highly regarded Désiré Feuerle’s collection which includes international contemporary artists, Imperial Chinese furniture and Southeast Asian art. The gallery will open to the public in Berlin Kreuzberg on 29 April 2016. The museum is located in a former Second World War telecommunications bunker that has been renovated.

Désiré Feuerle is an illustrious collector, In the 1990s he pioneered curating antiquities with contemporary art in his own gallery in Cologne, the Feuerle Gallery (1990-1998), through a series of ground-breaking exhibitions such as “Eduardo Chillida and the Chinese neck rests of Ming and Song dynasties.”

His collection brings together stone, bronze and wood Khmer sculptures from the 7th to 13th centuries, Imperial Chinese lacquer and stone furniture, wood and stone Chinese Scholar furniture from the Han Dynasty to Qing Dynasty, from 200 BC to the 18th century, with works by Anish Kapoor, Zeng Fanzhi, Byars and Cristina Iglesias. From 1990 to 1998, Feuerle had a gallery in Cologne where he organized many exhibitions paralleling Asian art and contemporary art (Eduardo Chillida and head rests of the Ming and Song Dynasties; Anish Kapoor and Ban Chiang poettery, and Richard Deacon and silver pots).

The Feuerle Collection is to open to the public for a week from April 29 to May 7 before hosting the 9th Berlin Biennale for Contemporary Art, from 4 June through 18 September. The ground floor will remain open to museum visitors. The official inauguration is expected in October 2016.
