EMPIRE II Launches First Event At Provincial Project Space Kendal Cumbria

Artist curators Rebecca Scott and Mark Woods are launching a new project space in Kendal Cumbria. The ironically named Provincial Project Space promises to offer up to four international quality shows each year. The privately funded project follows the success of similar provincial spaces like Payne Shurvell in Suffolk, Maureen Paley in Hove and Hauser & Wirth Somerset.

Empire II is an artist led project devised and curated by Vanya Balogh. It is currently on show as a collateral exhibition at the 57th Venice Biennale. This sequence of 115 imaginative short films programmed to play on a continuous loop represents a temporary digital archive designed to travel at high speed at any corner of the planet. Focused on our immediate present, The Age Of Anxiety and its challenges, artists are confronting ideas on climate change, violence, social media, corruption, identity loss, addiction, manipulation, false economics, cyber crime, pollution, sex, space travel, consumerism, love, hate, pollution, death and many other concurrent themes. This immersive multi screen experience will launch during C-Art Week in Cumbria at newly formed Provincial Project Space.

Empire II is a spontaneous reflex point, immersive single screen experience with a library, a hot eye that reflects on the elusiveness and temporality of the digital image, interweaving various paths, trends and approaches to filmmaking. Ranging from animation to cold cut editing, 115 digital shorts are transported from London via Brussels to Venice, on a hard drive, to reach its final destination that is a hybrid digital canvas, a boundary between independent cinema and contemporary art.

Empire II screen will confront us with ideas on climate change, politics of attrition, immigration, narcissism, sex, loss, despair, loss of identity, addiction, violence, false economics, digital rape, cyber crime, space travel, pollution, death and consumerism, all coexisting amongst many concurrent themes. Focused on our present, The Age of Anxiety, whilst turning madness into metaphysics, artists respond and demonstrate their feelings, thoughts, and objections to the post-truth world incumbent in lies and power struggles.
