Jeff Koons Easter Egg Hits £250k In Faberge Charity Auction




An Easter egg designed by the New York Artist Jeff Koons has attracted over $420,000 (£250,000) in online bids for a charity auction. The Fabergé Big Egg Hunt have organised artists like Tracey Emin ($26,000, Marc Quinn ($20,000)  Zaha Hadid ($37,000) and Bruce Webber ($9200) to join locals and visitors to engage in a mass treasure hunt. The eggs which have gone on display in a free exhibition at the Rockefeller Centre from April 18 to 25 has created a sensation this year with the calibre of artists attracted, to create unique decorated eggs.

The proceeds from the egg hunt are going to the conservation charity Elephant Family and Studio in a School, a New York-based arts and education organisation. At last count  Zaha Hadid’s egg has achieved $31,000. The organisers have stated that; “A hunt just wouldn’t be a hunt without prizes”.  So each week a spectacular Fabergé gem encrusted egg pendant has been given away. Headline sponsored by Fabergé, the event is 100% charitable although each lot will be charged an additional handling fee of $150 on top of the hammer price. Paddle 8 the online auctioneer are hosting the auction for free, donating their services to the charities good causes.
 
The oversized eggs which are really sculptures are 2.5 feet high. 267 of them many by well known artists, designers and public figures have been placed around the city. The hunt’s organisers have put many in obvious sight  but many are camouflaged in their environments. All are found using the dedicated Faberge egg-finder app. Over 47,000 of the free app has been downloaded with 32,000 registered users, who have collected 370,000 virtual eggs.
