Pulse Sees Large-Scale Works Surge During Frieze Week

Pulse New York 2013

The second day of PULSE (New York, May 10, 2013) saw strong interest in large-scale works, in both the main section and the IMPULSE section of the fair, which remains open through Sunday, May 12 at 7pm.

Eric Firestone Gallery (East Hampton, NY) was overcome with action where multiple photographs by hot School of Visual Arts graduate, John Messinger, were sold. His large-scale pieces are made of multiple, individualized sheets of instant film, creating a puzzle-like color field. In addition, large-scale photos by artist Tseng Kwong Chi – a friend and contemporary of Keith Haring, Andy Warhol, and Jean-Michel Basquiat, who documented his friends in their homes and studios –are in high demand, and have been continuously selling in the $15,000-$20,000 range.

Continuing the trend of large-scale sales, Susan Eley Fine Art (New York) sold two large paintings by Allison Green for $7,600 each, and at Davidson Contemporary(New York), a large-scale cut paper work by Thomas Witte sold for around $20,000.Nieves Fernandez (Madrid) also reported strong interest in a set of large drawings byChiharu Shiota, and Galerie Stefan Roepke (Cologne) has had tremendous interest in a huge, 36-panel work by Aitor Ortiz.

Action in the IMPULSE section of the fair was also brisk today. Denny Gallery (New York), participating in the gallery’s first fair ever, sold Dwells Among Us, 2011, a large mixed media work by Amanda Valdez for $7,000, as well as a number of small drawings by the artist. Aicon Gallery (New York) also sold a large stainless steel work by Adeela Suleman, estimated around $10,000.

Fair favorite Ambreen Butt’s large work constructed of strips of US currency sold to a collector via Carroll and Sons (Boston).

“We’re thrilled with the response to our booth and sales are strong. This has been a great fair so far,” highlights Thomas Von Lintel (New York), exhibiting at PULSE New York for his fourth time.
