The new V&A Dundee museum of design is set to tour around Scotland in 2015 in preparation of the building of its new state of the art gallery. A temporary “travelling gallery” will be installed at 78 venues and will including schools, museums and libraries before a finally returning to Victoria and Albert Museum HQ in London.
The BBC reported that the tour will include local design and heritage at every stop as well as showcasing leading designers. The groundbreaking of the V&A Dundee is set for sometime in 2015. The exhibition titled “Design in Motion” will tour visiting rural communities as well as major cities right across the country, from Fort William to Dumfries and Galloway, between 13 February and 12 June. The tour concludes in London on 21 June.
A brand new mobile app is currently being developed by Dundee firm eeGeo to track the bus as it traverses the country and highlight local stories about design over the past 300 years. Sarah Saunders, head of learning and engagement for V&A Dundee, said she was “delighted” to announce the tour. She said: “It’s an incredibly ambitious project, but one that we feel underlines the scope and scale of the new museum and really allows us to set out our stall as a new national institution.” The V&A Dundee is to form the centrepiece of Dundee’s waterfront, which is undergoing a £1bn regeneration.
In an update on the project Philip Long, Director of V&A at Dundee, said:’I am delighted by the approval, which now allows us to move V&A at Dundee further towards realisation. The V&A at Dundee team has been working on detailed plans to translate the outline design into a construction model, and that work is now almost complete. The project is entering a new phase, where within the next few months people will begin to see evidence of V&A at Dundee coming into being.
‘Kengo Kuma’s fabulous design will give Dundee and Scotland a wonderful space to enjoy outstanding international exhibitions, and to learn about and get involved with Scotland’s remarkable history of design creativity. I believe it will attract visitors from across the world.’
