Van Gogh Recreated With Virtual Reality Explores His Famous Paintings

Technical wiz-kid, animator Mac Cauley of New York has recreated a virtual walk through some of Vincent van Gogh’s best known art works. The video references well known paintings such as, ‘Starry Night’ and ‘Vase with Twelve Sunflowers’ which are recreated in 3D so viewers can  actually take a tour of ‘The Night Café’.

Cauley isolates the individual elements such as furniture and figures which allows you to see behind the objects as Van Gogh may have when painting the images. The juxtaposition of art and virtual reality is recreated with digital paint to match brushstrokes and colours used by the artist.

“I have always been drawn to the paintings of Van Gogh and I imagined it would be amazing to be inside one of these colorful worlds,” said Cauley of his submission. “While creating the environments of these paintings in 3D space, I’ve had to expand on areas that can’t be seen; rooms behind doors, objects hidden from view, people turned away from the viewer.”

Is this art? No, it’s just a bit of fun!
