Warhol Foundation Gifts $4 Million To Over 40 Art Causes

Among the beneficiaries of the latest round of funding from New York’s Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts are exhibitions devoted to Alberto Burri, R.H. Quaytman, Walid Raad and Arlene Shechet . The $4 million, or £2.6 millon in grants will go to more than 40 organisations, that will range from New York museums including the Museum of Modern Art and the Guggenheim, to organisers of the Raad and Burri shows, respectively – to non-profit organisations like Atlanta’s Burnaway, which publishes an art magazine that trains young writers.

A fact which artlyst considers to be a worthy beneficiary, especially considering Warhol’s acceptance of media in its entirety – including, of course, the creation of his own magazine ‘Interview’ – and Squeaky Wheel/Buffalo Media Resources, in Buffalo, New York, which promotes and supports film, video and new media arts.

Those at the higher end of fundiing success take home $150,000, or £98,500 each, are San Francisco’s National Alliance for Media Arts and Culture, which “fosters and fortifies the culture and business of independent media arts,” and Washington, D.C.’s New Venture Fund, which supports public interest projects. The New Venture Fund will use the money to support its Media Democracy Fund.

There are a total of 11 first-time grantees, of which among them are the Block Museum of Art at Northwestern University, in Chicago, the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, fort gondo compound for the arts in St. Louis, Missouri, and the Peréz Art Museum Miami. Other successful beneficiaries include the Aperture Foundation in New York, Artists Space again in New York, the Blaffer Art Museum, this time in Houston, Texas, the Museum of Contemporary Art Denver, and the Spencer Museum of Art in Lawrence, Kansas.

The fact of the foundation’s grant awards was kept strangely quiet with no press release given in association with the awards.
