Rebekah BrooksDear Artist/Member.

This month Rebekah Brooks, the disgraced former CEO of News International, was at the heart of a petition demanding the return of her honorary fellowship from University of the Arts, London.
We were also intrigued by the rumours that the News Of The World hacked into Damien Hirst, Jay Jopling and Tracey Emin’s phone messages.

Summer 2011 is at the halfway mark and many of the galleries are shutting up shop for August. This doesn’t necessarily translate to a month of cultural purgatory, as several galleries have summer exhibitions, which in this quieter time showcases group shows, mixing big name artists with new and emerging talent.

The London contemporary art market thrived in the first half of 2011 rising by 12.6%. Christie's alone sold art worth £140m in a single Modern sale. This is up 15% on last year. Sotheby’s London broke all records for a contemporary art sale, achieving (£109m) the largest total ever, outside of New York. Contemporary art is genuinely catching up with the Impressionist and Modern sales, with over £236m in total for London, a 102% increase on last summer.

Have a cool Summer! See you next month with a new look ArtLyst website.

Best Regards

Besides the power struggle at News Corp, Rebekah Wade resigning and the long overdue closing of News of the World, this has been a tremulous month of market uncertainty with the US $2.2 trillion debt crisis and the bail out of Greece in Europe. Strangely enough the art market has been thriving. Proving once again that it is a buoyant market in recessionary times. Tell that to Cameron and Hunt who have made 25% cuts in support for the arts this year.

British Museums Struggling With 25% Cuts

UK museums have had their funding cut by at least 25% by the Government and local councils in the past nine months, a survey has shown. The Museums Association's impact study clearly highlights the result of the government Spending Review, which took place in October 2010. 140 museums took part in the survey. There has been considerable anecdotal evidence that cuts to public funding have inflicted serious damage on the UK museums sector.

Michael Portillo To Chair New £55m Arts Scheme

A brand new Government scheme has earmarked £55 million to help arts and heritage organisations secure their future financial stability by building endowment funds. This was announced today by Culture Secretary, Jeremy Hunt. An independent advisory panel chaired by Michael Portillo will review bids from organisations for grants up to £5 million from the Endowment Fund, which will be available to match funds raised from private donors.

Terence Conran Donates £17.5m For New Design Museum

A significant donation of £17.5m from Sir Terence Conran has been promised to the Design Museum. This will be a large boost to the museums program to move from its current location in Shad Thames to the iconic Commonwealth Institute in Kensington. Last December the Culture Minister Jeremy Hunt announced plans for this sort of philanthropy as part of his departments, 'Big Society' drive.
