Dear Artist/Member.
This month Rebekah Brooks, the disgraced former CEO of News International, was at the heart of a petition demanding the return of her honorary fellowship from University of the Arts, London. We were also intrigued by the rumours that the News Of The World hacked into Damien Hirst, Jay Jopling and Tracey Emin’s phone messages.
Summer 2011 is at the halfway mark and many of the galleries are shutting up shop for August. This doesn’t necessarily translate to a month of cultural purgatory, as several galleries have summer exhibitions, which in this quieter time showcases group shows, mixing big name artists with new and emerging talent.
The London contemporary art market thrived in the first half of 2011 rising by 12.6%. Christie's alone sold art worth £140m in a single Modern sale. This is up 15% on last year. Sotheby’s London broke all records for a contemporary art sale, achieving (£109m) the largest total ever, outside of New York. Contemporary art is genuinely catching up with the Impressionist and Modern sales, with over £236m in total for London, a 102% increase on last summer.
Have a cool Summer! See you next month with a new look ArtLyst website.
Best Regards
