UNDERGRADUATE MAJOR
Director of Undergraduate Studies: Clint Jukkala
Yale College, the undergraduate division of Yale University, offers a Bachelor of Arts degree program with a major in art. Undergraduate applicants wishing to major in art at Yale must apply to Yale College directly. Please contact the Office of Undergraduate Admissions, PO Box 208234, 38 Hillhouse Avenue, New Haven CT 06520-8234, 203.432.9300 (www.yale.edu/admit/).
The program in art offers courses that, through work in a variety of media, provide an experience in the visual arts as part of a liberal education as well as preparation for graduate study and professional work. Courses at the 100 level stress the fundamental aspects of visual formulation and articulation. Courses numbered 200 through 499 offer increasingly intensive study leading to greater specialization in one or more of the visual disciplines such as graphic design, painting/printmaking, photography, and sculpture.
The prerequisites for acceptance into the major are a Sophomore Review, which is an evaluation of work from studio courses taken at Yale School of Art, and five terms of introductory (100-level) courses. Three must be completed at the time of the Sophomore Review. Visual Thinking (Art 111a or b) and Basic Drawing (Art 114a or b) are mandatory. At the time of the review, the student should be enrolled in the fourth and, ideally, the fifth 100-level courses. In exceptional cases, arrangements for a special review during the junior year may be made with the director of undergraduate studies in art.
For graduation as an art major, a total of fourteen [14] course credits in the major field is required. These fourteen course credits must include the following: (1) five prerequisite courses at the 100 level (including Visual Thinking and Basic Drawing); (2) five 200-level and above courses; (3) a Junior Major Seminar (Art 395a); (4) the Senior Project (Art 495a or b); and (5) two courses in the History of Art. Suggested program guidelines and specific requirements for the various areas of concentration are available from the director of undergraduate studies. A suggested program guideline is as follows:
Freshman Year: Studio courses, two terms
Sophomore Year: Studio courses, three terms Art history, one term
Junior Year: Studio courses, three terms including the Junior Major Seminar Art history, one term
Senior Year: Studio courses, four terms including the Senior Project
*Permission of instructor required in all art courses.
Graduate courses may be elected by advanced undergraduate art majors who have completed all undergraduate courses in a particular area of study and who have permission of the director of undergraduate studies as well as the course instructor.
Undergraduates are normally limited to credit for four terms of graduate- or professional-level courses (courses numbered 500 and above). Please refer to the section on Academic Regulations in Yale College Programs of Study for further pertinent details.

The Fine Arts faculty is drawn from artists representing major directions in the contemporary art world, many exhibiting in major galleries and museums. Varied course offerings enable students to create programs of study particularly suited to the development of their talents and interests. Options include various media such as charcoal drawing, oil painting, etching, bronze casting, ceramics, and jewelry. All fine arts students enroll in a common sophomore year program. This enables students to examine each of the different studio art areas prior to selecting an emphasis in the junior year. The last two years of study at Pratt lead to focused aesthetic directions, developing those skills required to professionally realize them.
Pratt students learn through studio work, group discussion, lectures, seminars, individual consultations, and frequent visits to museums, galleries, and artists’ studios.
Upon entering the junior year, students focus in one of the following areas: painting, drawing, sculpture, printmaking, ceramics, or jewelry.
Elective opportunities in the following areas are career-oriented options open to fine arts majors: fine arts/computer graphics, fine arts/film-video, fine arts/photography, fine arts/art education, and fine arts/illustration. These programs combine a full and professional program in fine arts with opportunities to gain additional knowledge and skills important to pursuing alternative careers in the arts.

Cooper Union School Of Art

NY 10003
Phone: 212-353-4120
Website: http://www.cooper.edu/art
The School of Art offers a four-year program leading to the Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. The BFA program provides both a general visual arts education and a focused preparation for future artists and designers.
The program develops the students' creative potential, encourages them to be versatile, resourceful and reflective, and equips them to deal successfully with the practical problems and issues of today and those of the future.
The School of Art is firmly committed to a generalist curriculum that encompasses all the fundamental disciplines and resources of the visual arts. Each student is educated not only in specific disciplines, but also in the complex interrelationships of all the visual vocabularies. This philosophic premise relates to all the objectives of the School of Art and is the foundation upon which all teaching, creative work, service and research are based.
The Studio curriculum along with the Art History and General Studies components of the BFA program all have as their goal the acquisition of communication skills, the development of critical perspective, and the mastery of the materials and intellectual premises of the study of societies and people. Throughout eight semesters, students become socially aware, historically grounded, creative practitioners. They are taught to be critical analysts of the world of contemporary visual communications, art and the culture at large.
Integrated into studio practice and critique is the exposure to Western and non-Western history of art and design as well as an introduction to theoretical issues that are the subjects of current debate in the field.
In a world of increased specialization and professional fragmentation, artists and designers with a wide range of experiences have something unique to offer and are prepared to meet the diverse and rapidly changing professional challenges confronting them after graduation. The vital and collaborative role generalists play in their respective professional fields also extends to the civic arena.

The Slade School
UCL, Gower Street

The Slade School of Fine Art is concerned with contemporary art and the practice, history and theories that inform it. It approaches the study and practice of art in an enquiring, investigative, experimental and research-minded way, consciously contributing to the lively discourses of contemporary art, nationally and internationally. All Slade staff are actively involved in research as well as teaching and between them have a broad and diverse range of interests and expertise.
Slade facilities and infrastructure for research support the discourse around painting, sculpture and fine art media. In the recent 2008 RAE, 70% of the department's research activity was recognised as being in the top two categories of 4* ('world leading') or 3* ('internationally excellent'). This result confirms that the Slade is one of England's leading university departments for research in Fine Art. Studio space and facilities have been expanded and enhanced in recent years and a large research centre and project space has been established in the Woburn Square studios.
From September 2009 the Slade will admit students to the new BFA in Fine Art. This is a three-year, full-time programme which will complement the four-year BA in Fine Art. In all, there are around 140 undergraduates, 120 graduate taught students and a dozen PhD students at the Slade. Each taught programme is studio-based and students develop their own work with tutorial and technical assistance according to their individual needs.
The Slade's foundation in 1871 was the result of a bequest from Felix Slade who envisaged a school where fine art would be studied within a liberal arts university. UCL is one of the leading research universities in the world and increasingly provides opportunities for students and staff to develop collaborative projects and interdisciplinary research initiatives. The Slade’s location in the centre of London, close to many important galleries, museums, libraries and theatres, provides excellent opportunities for students to access a wide range of learning resources and research opportunities.

The opening marked the culmination of an extended effort by William Barton Rogers, a distinguished natural scientist, to establish a new kind of independent educational institution relevant to an increasingly industrialized America. Rogers stressed the pragmatic and practicable. He believed that professional competence is best fostered by coupling teaching and research and by focusing attention on real-world problems. Toward this end, he pioneered the development of the teaching laboratory.
Today MIT is a world-class educational institution. Teaching and research—with relevance to the practical world as a guiding principle—continue to be its primary purpose. MIT is independent, coeducational, and privately endowed. Its five schools and one college encompass numerous academic departments, divisions, and degree-granting programs, as well as interdisciplinary centers, laboratories, and programs whose work cuts across traditional departmental boundaries

Ecole nationale supérieure des beaux-arts
14 rue Bonaparte, 75006 Paris
Tél : (33-0) 1 47 03 50 00
Fax : (33-0) 1 47 03 50 80
Web : http://www.ensba.fr/english
The Ecole des beaux-arts is made up of a vast complex of buildings located between the quai Malaquais and the rue Bonaparte, in the heart of Saint-Germain-des-Près, just across from the Louvre museum. Held in the King's tutelage until 1863, an imperial decree of November 13, 1863 named the school's director, who serves for a five year term. Long supervised by the Ministry of Public Instruction, the Ecole des beaux-arts is now a public establishment of an administrative character, supervised by the Ministry of Culture and Communication (Delegation for the Plastic Arts) since October 26, 1984.
Today, the Ensba provides a high level of training over a period of five years, in which the foundations of artistic process are conjoined with the stakes of contemporary art production.
Teaching is diversified and based on working in the studio. Three departments: artistic practices, theories of art, technical workshops allow for efficient organization and flexibility, regular dialogue, and the putting into place of projects. Besides the professors and studio-heads, invited artists contribute to and enlarge the School's pedagogical program.
Theoretical courses permitting diverse approaches to the history of the arts complement studio work, which is supported by technical training and access to technical bases.
The Ensba media center provides students with rich documentation on art, and organizes conferences, seminars, and debates throughout the year.
Finally, students benefit from the School's active international programs, through exchange agreements with foreign schools all over the world (forty or so students participate each year).
At the end of their period of study, students receive a diploma (diplôme national supérieur d'arts plastiques), after presenting their work to a jury largely made up of specialists from outside of the School.
The School houses prestigious historical collections, publishes a dozen texts per year on different collections, and holds exhibitions in the Quai Malaquais space and the Chapel throughout the year.
Access to the Ensba is reserved for students, professors, staff, and visitors. Studios are strictly closed to the public, except during the annual open house in June. Tourist visits are forbidden, however, the Ensba can be visited with an Ensba tour-guide on Monday afternoons, except during school holidays. Please contact the office of communication and exhibitions.
