Andrew Logan Welcome To My Most Glamorous World – Review

Andrew Logan

Fresh from their successful exhibition of the works of iconic London artist Duggie Fields, mere weeks ago, curator partnership DuoVision (James Lawler and Martin Green) have pulled off another coup with their newest exhibition, a retrospective of the works of sculptor, performance artist, jewellery-maker, portraitist and painter Andrew Logan – Andrew Logan: Welcome To My World. Part of Homotopia and the Biennial Independents 2012 the exhibition has been running from 26th October and ends on 21st November.

The gallery space itself divided into two distinct sections for this show – one focussing on Logan’s creation and directorship of the flamboyantly anarchic Alternative Miss World events and the works that sprang from this and the other on his works as a portraitist and sculptor. The latter is dominated by vast, glittering mirror portraits of many of the friends, influences and heroes that he has collected in his time as a leading, and loveably eccentric, figure in British art and culture.

It must be noted that, with their tongues firmly in their cheeks, no doubt, DuoVision enhance the experience of the wondrous mirror portraiture, bringing out not only the beauty, but the humour in Logan’s works, by having put together a music soundtrack that features every mirror/glass reference known to man. These guys are good.

Logan’s works here create a fantasy world of metropolitan glamour and shimmering poetic beauty that challenge conventional aesthetics and notions of identity. His bust sculptures – of actor friends, Divine and Fenella Fielding – are so eerily lifelike that one expects them to greet you as you walk through. And it is not by chance that we each see ourselves in Logan’s magical mirrors.
As with the Duggie Fields exhibition, Lawler and Green have turned the spotlight onto an artist who, by contemporary standards, is often overlooked and yet who proves here that their work is as strong, vibrant and relevant as it ever was. You just have to see the pieces to understand the influence that Logan has had throughout the years on other artistic luminaries such as Grayson Perry, Derek Jarman and Leigh Bowery.

The very title of this exhibition invites the viewer to experience Logan’s world. And I’m happy to say that it is a world we should ALL experience. The exhibition runs until 21 November.
