Review: CINDY SHERMAN

When Cindy Sherman was growing up she must have had Beatles or Monkees wall paper in her bedroom. Actually I can visualise her suburban room with pink shag carpeting, teak shelves and Barbie wall paper. Maybe this is all fantasy, but one key element must have existed and that was a large battered dressing up box. Cindy Sherman's exhibition at Spruth Magers reflects this in a way we have come to admire and anticipate. The exhibition covers the architecturally pared down gallery space, transforming it with "Cindy Wallpaper". The historic costumes characterise the artist as society women in the mould of John Singer Sargent dames. They are dressed elegantly as Lady Jane Grey, Jane Austen heroines and Edwardian ladies of the night. The only problem with this exhibition is actually viewing these oversized photographs, in the interior space provided. It just doesn't work. The best view is from the street. I will return tomorrow when the liggers have all gone home, but find the scale of the work needs to fit the space and as good as the photos are, the installation makes them impossible to view.
