Review: GILBERT & GEORGE - URETHRA POSTCARD ART

GILBERT & GEORGE - URETHRA POSTCARD ART - ArtLyst Event

"Urethra Post Card Pictures" Gilbert & George's latest exhibition  is a  Kaleidoscopic  experience from the time you enter the concrete floored White Cube  gallery in Mayfair. The collages are hung salon style and all use multiple examples of the same post/calling cards to form the final image. Some are pure text. Others include photographic images of the chosen subjects. Many of the collages have utilized erotic phone box cards ,advertising various sexual services from an assortment of Dominatrixes and Lady boys. The series is based on the doctrine of CW Leadbeater a partitioner of Theosophy and confirmed masturbator. His trademark was a symbol of a circle with a dot in the centre and all of the G&G collages seem to follow this pattern. The exhibition also uses a variety of tourist postcards from London and further afield. They are possibly holiday cards from the Continent to the Caribbean. and likely from places G&G have visited which hold nostalgia and meaning for the Artists. The main thing to take on board when visiting this exhibition is the wit and humour of the subject matter. It is also interesting to point out that rather then having a team to construct these works G&G have produced all of the work themselves.  **** Rating
