Review: Martin Creed 'Mothers'

Martin Creed, 'Mothers', Hauser and Wirth, London W1
Which ever way you choose to look at life, whoever you are, whatever you have become, you will always have a mother relationship. Some mothers like to embrace, love, show tenderness, take the reign, find their role of an archetypal ‘Mother’, or redesign that role. The child, as an adult may feel they have been abandoned, trapped, trodden on, or squashed by their mother. Whatever way we look at this, if our mother is passed, living on the other side of the world, dominating, dictatorial, loving, affectionate, advisory, organising, abandoning; whatever the issue, its going to effect us, here we have an opportunity to look at that relationship. Walking in to Martin Creed’s exhibition is an interesting process, as you cannot help but feel dominated by ‘MOTHERS’. The mother of all mothers, as a large, heavy white sign spins above head level taking up a large proportion of gallery space. How do you relate to your life in respect of 'Mother'? How has your relationship or lack of relationship with the woman taking on this role, affected you?We are led in to two eclectic gallery spaces with large photographs of a large and small dog and some abstract paintings, pyramids of crosses, horizontal lines, signage. A projection of a nipple, that gave me the wonder of the role of intimacy, difficult to look at as ‘Mother’, maybe a dialogue about sexualising the ‘Mother’ or relating to the ‘Wife’? I would like to of connected with the journey of MOTHER in a way that could lead into many insightful details, to do connection, disconnection, projection, entrapment, insecurity, interference, identity, soul family, responsibilities, sexuality and the effects on relationship. However I am not sure the work intended a debate beyond the initial connection. In a sentence, maybe its appropriate to check in with any inner feeling of projection of values, pain, insecurity, disconnection, dominance that you may have experienced in your life from 'her'. Give the energy back to her and carry on your day. The show is after all, an experience of ‘light’-ness.
