From pop-up art shows, corporate art collection shows, student final year shows to main stream commercial art galleries, final year Camberwell School of Art BA Illustration student, Florence Goodhand-Tait gives her selection of shows on in London during July.
A collage exhibition is currently being held at The Print House in Dalston. The artists were chosen through a zealous competition and it is a small collection of collages mostly made from photographic imagery. Work in the exhibition includes Jean Phillippe Paumier who makes humorous simple collages in which something is cut out and placed somewhere else, for example a fridge is placed on top of a mountain. One piece of work includes elements other than collage: an image where paint leaks from binoculars. David Keepling creates multi layered collages with elements coming out of the page into the foreground. They remind me of Alexander Korzer-Robinson’s work. David Gorriz creates fantasy scenes. Megan Wellington intertwines bodies with plants. Hannah Grace adds map elements to landscapes. Laura Hope creates joiner photo mountain landscapes. And Sarah Gautrey juxtaposes backgrounds with unlikely foregrounds.

The annual Bold Tendencies exhibition is being held in the Peckham multi-storey carpark, so is worth a look while on your way to drink some overpriced Pimms at Frank’s cafe. This year seems to feature a lot more patterned based work – a change from their usual sculptural theme. I particularly liked a fabric piece of a nude man with sewn on shapes of black material. I think the naive aesthetic adds to the tone.

A Richard Prince exhibition of Instagram pictures is being held at the Gagosian gallery. It’s an amusing change of context to see these images in a gallery setting and you can leave with a free poster.

The BA Illustration class of 2015 or Rock Paper Scissors are holding their external exhibition in the Hoxton Arches. It is almost the same work seen in the internal show except fewer students are involved and the exhibition has been solely organised by the students, not the college, so the work has been curated by them. I found in this space the work looks more at home and I was able to notice works I hadn’t noticed in the internal show, for example, Nina Takeuchi’s book of expressive reportage drawings of Neasden Temple. Also, while there, you can engage in workshops run by the students, for example marbling which is a fun and easy way to make patterns with ink and water.

David Blandy is exhibiting Hercules: Rough Cut at the Bloomberg Space. The exhibition is a small black room with a large screen at the back and several rotating TV screens in front of it. The screens show images of civilisation while a loud, aggressive and poetic voice plays over the top. The messages presented consume you as there is nowhere else to look.

Felix Treadwell, who recently graduated from Camberwell, has done well to acquire a large space in the CNB Gallery. The young painter has a recognisable style that is playful and creepy. The paintings make some amusing observations including comparing Art school with Primary School. The paint is mostly solid colour on the canvas but in some paintings there are visible brush strokes; the latter are more effective I think as they give a more grimy and real aesthetic. Amongst the paintings is one sculptural piece of a half inflated head which celebrates the wobbly looking character featured in several of the paintings.
