A major review of the career of David Bomberg (1890 – 1957), revered as one of the greatest British artists of the 20th century. Taught by Walter Sickert at the Westminster College and joining the ranks of the ‘golden generation’ at the Slade School of Fine Art, he became an inspiration himself to a generation of artists including Frank Auerbach and Leon Kossoff at the Borough Polytechnic in the 1940s and 1950s.
The exhibition charts an incredible career that started with a trip to Paris where he met Picasso, Derain and Modigliani. From there on he was invited by Wyndham Lewis into the Vorticist fold and exhibited with the New English Art Club. He was a founding member of the London Group and later the inspiration behind the Borough Group, organised by his students in 1946. The First World War saw a transition from the near abstraction of his Vorticist work to a more figurative and expressionist style. A keen traveller, many of his greatest post-war works were created outside the UK, and the 1920s saw his first trips to Spain and Palestine.
The exhibition will be co-curated with the Ben Uri Gallery and will mark the 60th anniversary of Bomberg’s death. It will feature works from major public and private collections and will be accompanied by a monograph to be published by Lund Humphries.
