Federica Beretta PROGETTO/PROJECT

New exhibition called PROGETTO/PROJECT presents works by an emerging Italian artist Federica Beretta. This is Beretta’s first solo show in the UK. Her works represent an on-going continuum as each new piece has its origins in the art work that precedes it.

The exhibition PROGETTO/PROJECT comprises new works across a number of media.

The highlight of the exhibition is her piece progetto/project. In this work Beretta explores the Italian word ‘abito’, which means not only ‘a habit’/‘a dress’, but also ‘I live’.  Beretta uses this alternative meaning of a habit to look at the elements that differentiate social structures as a way to provoke discussion about their impact on human life, thinking and being.

Beretta said: I analyzed dress in its broadest sense: as a way of understanding a person’s position in society, their power and cultural links, everything is connected and it all belongs to the precise system that defines the society we live in today.

The exhibition also includes a collection of four drawings entitled
constructive visions-n2 each of which based around architectural details.
For these drawings, which focus on the importance of the origins of a building, Beretta draws inspiration from the many construction sites across London.

The presented drawings are striking as they appear incomplete, unfinished, almost like skeletons. These snapshots, showing the birth of important new buildings, highlight the role of architecture in shaping the environment we live in and how their presence influences the people who interact with them.

A further piece process consists of a roll of craft paper, which shows the notes and sketches that Beretta toils over before beginning to create. This piece gives the viewer a unique insight into the thinking and challenges that Beretta has to overcome before reaching clarity on the shape of the next piece of her life’s art continuum.

Beretta commenting on the PROGETTO/PROJECT exhibition said: Central to my approach is the fact that the ideas and inspiration for a new work has its roots in the previous one and equally importantly it is an essential step to my next creation.
