Exhibition runs from the 17th June – 30th June 2011

Opening its doors for the first time this June, we are proud and excited to announce the arrival of Coldharbour London.

A 15,000 sq ft multi- functional gallery & artist studio space, set in a converted 1960’s print factory in Brixton. Coldharbour London Gallery’s launch with Illumination, aims to shine a light on South East London’s ever increasing art scene, this will open to the public on Friday 17h June.

Illumination, curated by Aretha Campbell, will bring together the work of both emerging and established contemporary artists – Adam Barker-Mill, Lawrence Lek, Luke Montgomery, Molly Smyth, Josh Alexander and Kirstie Macleod.

Montgomery’s work will explore the gulf between our public beliefs and private desires by creating spaces that lie between abstraction and realism. The pulsing visual vortex, that is Barker-Mill’s Disco Volante, morph’s from neon pink to acid green from fizzing orange, through every shade in-between to ice-cream pastels. As in the confinement chamber, the notion of real space soon becomes redundant, as the light surrounds you and enters your very being. There is no certain here or now…you emerge from your bubble-dazed and blurry-eyed…into a brave new world.

Smyth’s sculptural practice ranges from the miniature to the monumental, often referencing the built environment, particularly urban landscapes, and the human form. This large installation contrasts beautifully to Macleod’s delicate light boxes, which encompass and substanti- ate the shimmering spectrum of artificial light. The backdrop of Lek’s intricately carved TWINS looms out of the darkness manipulating shadows and simultaneously our senses, creating a world within a world.

This exhibition will run until the end of June 2011.
