Iona Rowland and Laurence Jones: Concrete

A collaborative exhibition in which fashion, art and architecture collide through a re-appropriation of reality.

Both artists fragment and manipulate idealistic images which flood contemporary mass culture; deconstructing and reconstructing to question the permanence of these visuals and expose their vulnerability to change. It is difficult to establish whether the artists are concealing or revealing in their multi-layered compositions; figures and buildings seem to be brought forward and then pushed back as if in a continuous state of post-production. The paintings appear to shift from 2D to 3D, as realism and fiction become intertwined in an almost cinematic viewing experience. At first glance, the works are overtly seductive, enticing viewers with their lavishly glossy surfaces; however, on further observation the paintings seem remote and detached, lost in a web of artificiality and pseudoism.
