“john lewell | RECONNECTING” is an exhibition of 50 artworks based on the artist’s own street photographs which he has deconstructed then put back together in alternative compositions.
His aim, he says, is to reconnect photography and art, bringing to art some of photography’s unique characteristics like spontaneity and the decisive moment. These are qualities that most contemporary artists avoid in their attempt to attain complete objectivity and a sense of ‘presence.’
The images in “john lewell | RECONNECTING” cover a spectrum of feeling, some of them suggesting unease and dissociation, others harmony and intimacy. There are also one or two that contain a complete narrative, but they are the exception. The artist is more interested in the single moment and the way in which it is experienced in different ways by different individuals.
