Cob Studios is proud to present Between The Trees, an exhibition of recent paintings by British emerging artist Juliette Berkeley. Time does not stand still in Berkeley’s paintings, but becomes an ellipse. A cycle of memories and dreams punctuated by real-history events is at the core of her narratives. Landscapes are revealed through their shadows while human behaviour is witnessed through moments of intimacy. Berkeley is adept at portraying the mysterious. The artist is inspired by a variety of found photographs and images, including family portraits, early 20th century portraits of Native Americans, contemporary reportage of Pripyat, Chernobyl, and stills from a variety of independent films. Berkeley uses these images to prompt what she defines a ‘visual meditation’, allowing her to interpret her response through graceful brushwork. The figurative paintings in Between The Trees all demonstrate the artist’s ruminative approach to her subjects; the more abstract compositions belie a fascination with space and memory.
