Sotheby’s has announced that it will be handling the estate collection of the great American playwright Edward Albee. The dedicated auction will be held this September in New York with proceeds of the sale benefiting The Edward F. A new auction record for Wassily Kandinsky was broken twice last night at Sotheby’s London. Murnau – Landschaft mit grünem Haus from 1909, sold for £21 million / $26.4 million / €23.9 million. Both early works by Kandinsky were among the few left in private hands, this painting made its auction debut having remained in the private collection of the same family since the 1920s.

Sotheby’s New York Impressionist and Modern sale last night achieved $173 Million, despite an important early work by the Austrian master Egon Schiele being withdrawn at the last minute. Kazimir Malevich’s Suprematist painting Composition With Plane In Projection (1915). topped the sale.
Jean-Michel Basquiat’s ‘Untitled’ painting from 1982, a monumental canvas that has rarely been seen since it last appeared on the market in May 1984, is the centrepiece of Sotheby’s Contemporary Art sale in New York on the 18 May.
The auction was led by a record for pioneer of ‘light art’ Chris Levine as his strikingly modern portrait of Queen Elizabeth II tripled its pre-sale estimate to sell for £187,500 (£50,000-80,000).
