10. Jake And Dinos Chapman, Sad Presentiments From Insult To Injury, 2003

Jake Dinos Chapman etchings

The Chapmans bought a complete set of what has become the most revered series of prints in existence, Goya’s Disasters of War. It was a mint condition set of 80 etchings printed from the great artist’s plates. In terms of art history, it was a treasure – so the dastardly duo vandalised it. There is something shocking about the notion of destroying or defacing someone else’s art, especially when it’s of historical significance. Unless you’re convinced by the argument that the Chapmans had in fact perpetrated an act of ‘rectification’ by painting into Goya’s work. In doing so the artist’s ‘inadvertently’ increased the value of the remaining etchings, and subsequently their own set, a contemporary intervention that certainly upset some people in the art world, but not the artists, or any auction house for that matter.
