Brand new works by the British street artist Banksy have appeared in New York. The elusive king of graffiti has unveiled plans for a month-long residency in the city that never sleeps. For the next month Banksy will be attempting to present an entire solo show on the streets of New York. You may follow it around by ringing the number below.
To enhance your enjoyment of the exhibits an audio guide is provided via mobile/cell phone. Simply call the number next to the painting and select the appropriate option on the keypad. This is a toll free service a message on the Banksy website states. Banksy is spoofing audio guides such as the ones that frequently appear in Museums. It has the voice of a smooth academic explaining the works in an over complicated and pretentious way.
His first graffiti art in months after a very quiet summer, shows two boys holding a spray can and is entitled ‘The Street Is In Play’. It was spotted on 1 October in Allen Street in lower Manhattan, but by Wednesday someone had painted over the mural with white paint. The second work, sprayed on a garage door in a scrawl, reads “This is my New York accent”. The words “I normally write like this” are below in neatly printed text. This piece has been tagged in black marker by others, making it difficult to read.
Two of the works have now been painted over or vandalised. A third has now also appeared showing a dog lifting his leg on a fire hydrant. A speech bubble reads ‘You complete me’.
