Christie’s Reports $1 Billion Week With 14 World Auction Records Achieved

Christieʼs last week achieved over a billion dollars in sales from a single week of auctions. This followed the success of  their May sale season. Major records were set as collectors from nearly 50 countries bid for rare works by Amedeo Modigliani, Roy Lichtenstein and Lucio Fontana, setting new auction record prices for these 20th century masters. Distinguished provenances continue to be highly prized as shown in The Arthur and Anita Kahn Collection, which was 100% sold with 24 Alexander Calder sculptures selling for a total of $38.2 million against a pre-sale low estimate of $10.7 million. 

The week began with Christie’s curated sale The Artistʼs Muse bringing together highly sought-after works by the greatest names in modern and contemporary art. The highlight of this sale was an Impressionist & Modern work of art Nu couché by Amedeo Modigliani, which sold for $170.4 million, the second highest price for any painting sold at auction. Christie’s was also delighted to have achieved the season’s highest price for a Post-War and Contemporary work of art, when Roy Lichtensteinʼs Nurse sold for $95.4 million.

$331.8 million  Highest Price for a Sculpture by a Female Artist: Louise Bourgeois’s Spider sold for $28,165,000. Impressionist & Modern Art Evening Sale achieved a 91% sell-through rate.

This season’s impressive results with a total of $1.8 billion this year makes Christie’s Impressionist & Modern Art the Global Market Leader of 2015.
