Damien Hirst To Auction Cabinet Piece For Victim Education Programs

Deyrolle auction house in Paris is to partner with the Turner Prize winning artist Damien Hirst and online auction Paddle8 to present Damien Hirst with Deyrolle: The Cabinet of Curiosities Signification (Hope, Immortality and Death in Paris, Now and Then). Profits will be donated to Victim, a charity founded by Damien Hirst, and allocated to programs for education Deyrolle natural science and the preservation of biodiversity.

A selection of fifty objects among those presented in the study has a double – and base signed by the artist. These additional items will be exhibited at Deyrolle on 23 September and offered for sale exclusively at the site of the auction Paddle8.com October 14 to 28. Through this collaboration, Hirst joined the prestigious lineage of artists who are inspired by Deyrolle since its inception in 1831, Salvador Dalí Jean Dubuffet contemporary Huang Yong Ping or as Mark Dion.

Proof of unstoppable passion for Damien Hirst’s Natural History, Signification (Hope, Immortality and Death in Paris, Now and Then) is a contemporary cabinet of curiosities that respects a historical tradition dating back to the sixteenth century. The style of the work recalls the iconic series “Firms instruments” stainless steel and glass in the early 1990s Hirst this wall cabinet filled with a profusion of articles taxidermy, entomology and skeletons he himself selected from the extraordinary collection Deyrolle, amid natural specimens, artifacts and objects that man is appropriate. Meaning explores fundamental themes in the work of Hirst, namely the complex relationship between nature and science, myth and reality, art and beauty, life and death.

Damien Hirst was born in 1965 in Bristol and grew up in Leeds. He studied Fine Art at Goldsmiths College from 1986 to 1989, and whilst in his second year, he conceived and curated a group exhibition entitled ‘Freeze’. The show is commonly acknowledged to have been the launching point not only for Hirst, but for a generation of British artists. Since the late 1980s, Hirst has used a varied practice of installation, sculpture, painting and drawing to explore the complex relationships between art, beauty, religion and science
