The French are a defiant lot when it comes to business and culture, but COVID and new EU movement regulations have cancelled FIAC Paris the last major fair of the year to announce it will not be taking place in October.
The 2020 edition of FIAC (Foire Internationale d’Art Contemporain) the 47th edition of the fair, previously scheduled to take place at the Grand Palais in Paris from October 22-25, now will not take place until October 2021.
Fair organisers said they felt “great disappointment” in a statement announcing the news
“Despite our efforts and our deep determination to organise FIAC,” fair director Jennifer Flay and head of institutional relations Charlotte Ardon said in a statement sent to the fair’s VIP list, “in 2020, we are not in a position to offer you an event that meets your legitimate expectations.” Flay declined to comment further.
Exhibitors will be reimbursed in full for the money they already put toward the canceled 2020 event. This year’s exhibitions of outdoor artworks through FIAC’s “Hors les Murs” program have also been called off. Recent editions have seen between 190 and 199 participating exhibitors.
The official press release went like this: It is with great disappointment that the FIAC is forced to cancel its 2020 edition, scheduled at the Grand Palais from October 22 to 25.
This decision is the result of the numerous and constant exchanges between the organization and its exhibitors, visitors, collectors and partners in recent weeks.
Despite a deep determination to set up, once again this year, the great meeting of contemporary and modern art that is FIAC, and tireless work to overcome the many difficulties caused by the health crisis, the organization considers that it is unable to offer an event that meets the expectations and ambitions of its exhibitors and visitors.
This decision concerns the FIAC at the Grand Palais, but also at its Hors les Murs sites, the Petit Palais, the Tuileries Garden, the Eugène-Delacroix National Museum, the Place Vendôme and the Place de la Concorde.
In this context, the FIAC has undertaken to reimburse exhibitors 100% of the sums already paid. The FIAC would like to thank its exhibitors, its institutional partners, its visitors, its sponsors and all those who carried the project of a FIAC 2020 to the end for their commitment and invaluable support.
The 47th edition of the FIAC will be held from October 21 to 24, 2021 at the Grand Palais Éphémère in Champ-de-Mars.
Let’s shed a tear and light up another Gauloises as this year is now officially a right off!
