Jordan Baseman Appointed Head of Sculpture at the Royal College of Art

The Royal College of Art has announced the appointment of Jordan Baseman as the new Head of Sculpture within the School of Fine Art.

Baseman graduated in 1983 with a BFA from Tyler School of Art, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and in 1988 with an MA from Goldsmiths College, University of London. Currently, he is the Reader in Time-based Media at Wimbledon College of Art, University of the Arts, London, and for several years has been a Tutor in the RCA Sculpture programme. He was artist in residence at St John’s College, University of Oxford, having also taught at Oxford University’s Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art.

Baseman will welcome the Sculpture students at the start of the new autumn term and officially takes up his post in late November 2013. Commenting on his appointment, Jordan Baseman said:

“I am thrilled to be taking up the position of Head of Sculpture at the RCA and very much look forward to working closely with students and staff.”

RCA Pro Rector (Academic), Professor Naren Barfield added: “Jordan Baseman is a rare individual, combining a highly regarded artistic practice with strong academic leadership skills, and a very active research record. I know both staff and students will warmly welcome him to the College.”

Baseman has a long history of executing projects in collaboration with public institutions. These have included residencies and commissions for: Papworth Hospital (Heart and Lung Transplant Unit), Cambridge; Matt’s Gallery London, The Science Museum, London; Grizedale Arts, Cumbria; The Photograghers’ Gallery London; The Wellcome Trust, London; Monash University, Melbourne, Australia; University of Tasmania, Australia; and The London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

In recent years he has received grants from: Arts Council England, The Arts & Humanities Research Council, The British Council, The Henry Moore Foundation, The Wellcome Trust and London Arts Board. In addition, he has exhibited and screened work internationally in galleries and film festivals including Australia, USA, Austria, Germany, Japan, Portugal, France and Italy.

The following staff have been appointed to the position of Reader: Rut Blees Luxemburg: Reader in Urban Aesthetics; Tim O’Riley: Reader in Printmaking and Digital Practice; Ian Kiaer: Reader in Painting Post-Medium; Sarah Jones: Reader in Photography.
