Last year It was reported in many of the major UK newspapers, that a 25 year old trainee accountant discovered a Jelly Bean in a 700g jar of the confection, that resembled Kate Middleton. Our experts at ArtLyst examined photos of the bean in question and concluded that it was more than likely an elaborate hoax, using digital manipulation or hand painting to produce a likeness that resembled the Duchess. The jelly bean never appeared on ebay as claimed by the owners leading us to believe that this story was created by a PR company or tabloid journalist.
Richard Cullen, Managing Director for The Jelly Bean Factory in Dublin, who produces the product said,”All of our beans are handmade and this looks like one of our red speckled Mango beans, the natural speckles are unique to each and every jelly bean due to the handmade process. This sounds truly incredible, I would have to see the bean myself to believe it.” We incorrectly reported that the Jelly Bean Factory had documented beans with life like images of the Virgin Mary, Napoleon Bonaparte and Elvis Costello embellishing their surfaces. This has actually been corrected by the company. Richard Cullen from the JBF has commented directly to ArtLyst, “Many thanks for the blog about the Kate Middleton’s Jelly Bean Portrait.
Cullen added; “Firstly, I have yet to see the bean, but I am looking forward to seeing it one day, and so are our staff in the Dublin factory. We do find the who thing quite incredible, but we do make over 10 million jelly beans per day by hand, and the speckles are splashed on like an artist at work, so anything is possible.
Secondly, I have to comment on the post about this happening before with The Virgin Mary, Napoleon Bonaparte and Elvis Costello on our beans, this is news to me and has never happened before at The Jelly Bean Factory, However, we would really like to see them, if you know of their whereabouts. This would make a great art collection”.
In the media frenzy running up to last years Royal Wedding, newspapers pulled out all of the stops to find a Kate story which would capture the publics imagination. This had to be the most ridiculous angle for an article printed, but we actually liked it and thought that we would share it with you again. Besides it’s Easter bank holiday weekend and we all know that everyone loves jelly Bean Factory sweets!!! Mr Hosie and his girlfriend Jessica White, 24, from Taunton, Somerset, have claimed to have kept the mango-flavoured bean in a display cabinet and have said that they are still planning to sell it on eBay in the future.
