Local Competition Steps Up To Gagosian In China

Leading Chinese Contemporary art gallery Pearl Lam opens up next to Gagosian in Hong Kong

Pearl Lam Galleries, one of Asia’s leading art galleries dedicated to international contemporary art and design, has announced that it is extending its network of spaces to include a major new gallery in Hong Kong. The 340sqm gallery will be located on the sixth floor of the historic Grade II listed Pedder Building, alongside Gagosian, Ben Brown and Hanart TZ, at the heart of Hong Kong’s growing contemporary art scene. It will open to the public on Wednesday 16 May 2012, on the eve of ART HK.

Pearl Lam said: ‘Since Art HK’s first edition 4 years ago, Hong Kong has been gradually transforming into a contemporary art centre to rival London and New York, attracting both an international and local audience. I am elated by and proud of these changes and want to contribute to this continuing transformation. I am returning to my home, where I grew up and where I first started my business. I want to develop a dynamic and distinctive gallery programme that showcases international, Asian and local artists. I look forward to the gallery being at the centre of Hong Kong’s cultural scene and hope it will act as a meeting point to foster a dialogue between artists and collectors from Asia and throughout the world.’

The inaugural exhibition will take a look at Chinese contemporary abstract painting featuring artworks by eight leading Chinese abstract artists of different generations including Li Xiaojing, Qin Yufen, Qiu Zhenzhong, Zhu Jinshi , Yan Binghui , Su Xiaobai,  Zhang Jianjun  and Li Huasheng. The exhibition will be curated by Professor Gao Minglu, renowned scholar of Chinese contemporary art, and the accompanying catalogue will include a dialogue with British curator Paul Moorhouse from the National Portrait Gallery, London, on the differences between Chinese and Western abstract art.

The Hong Kong gallery programme will feature both fine art and design exhibitions to complement the existing programmes for the galleries in Shanghai.  It will continue to support young emerging artists such as Tsang Kin-Wah. The gallery will also bring a solo shows by major international artists and designers to Hong Kong including Zaha Hadid in 2012 and Yinka Shonibare in 2013.  In Shanghai in 2012 and 2013 work by the following artists will be exhibited; Lei Hong, Jonnathan Yeo, Wang Qingsong, Entang Wiharso and He Xiangyu.
