Mother House: First London Art Studio With Flexible Childcare Model Opens

The Mother House

“THE MOTHER HOUSE IS AN EXPERIMENTAL, DEDICATED CREATIVE SPACE FOR LONDON-BASED MOTHER-ARTISTS TO EXPLORE A LONG TERM DREAM AND MAKE IT A REALITY.”

The Mother House is a new independent directive by the Procreate Project in collaboration with Desperate Artwives.  The Mother House was born in response to the urge of “making” within the life-changing experience of motherhood, offering a collaborative yet intimate space to curate artists’ practice whilst ensuring their journey into motherhood is fed in a creative and inclusive way. “Mother House is something that has been screaming to be born ever since the Womenhouse at the CalArts in the ´72!” – Deidre Donoghue, M/other Voices Founder. The Mother House is supported by M/other voices, Mamsie, Prams in the hall, Feminism in London, IKLECTIK Art Lab.

“Mother House recognises the role space plays in creative work and exchange alongside the complexity of mother artists’ needs. Mother House inspires a wider understanding of artists engaged with their practices as mothers which are especially vital in a cultural epicenter like London where support is recognized as indispensable to artistic production” – Althea Greenan,  Special Collection Curator and Researcher for the Women’s Library (Make) at Goldsmith’s College

Over 36 London based artists and their children are coming together for an exploratory month into the intersection between the roles of mother and artist, observing the importance of their impact on private lives and within society. The Mother House residency is starting the 5th of September 2016 at the IKLECTIK Art Lab in London Waterloo and will provide a familiar context to share and reveal both the challenges and privileges of being a mother. The space will provide the artists with the freedom of working independently or alongside their children and it will also give them the opportunity to work in collaboration with other artists and create a supportive and inspiring network.

This short-term project would demonstrate how a dedicated space provides crucial support for mother artists’ professional development. This experiment will turn into an artwork itself as a documentary, which will be shown for a final open house day on the 9th of October, celebrating this journey and exhibiting all the works created during this time.

The Mother House Project will also hold talks and workshops during the weekends. Please refer to the website for full events timetable and artists list.
