Saatchi Art Announces New Sensations Winner

Saatchi Art, today announced that Charles Richardson is the winner of this year’s New Sensations Prize. The announcement coincides with the opening of the 2014 New Sensations exhibition, which features works by the 25 artists shortlisted for the prize now on view at B1, Victoria House in Bloomsbury, London. Launched in 2007 by Rebecca Wilson, chief curator of Saatchi Art ‘New Sensations’ supports graduates from BA and MA courses across the U.K. and Republic of Ireland and presents their work to an international audience each year during Frieze Week.

This year’s judges are gallery founder and curator Ceri Hand, artist Tom Hunter, arts writer Jessica Lack, Bloomberg New Contemporaries director Kirsty Ogg, and Saatchi Art chief curator Rebecca Wilson. Chosen by the panel; the New Sensations winner is awarded a cash prize to fund their studio for a year. The New Sensations panel of judges chose as their winner Charles Richardson, an MA graduate from UCL’s Slade School of Fine Art, for his film ‘Rehearsal’.

Of his win, Charles Richardson said to Saatchi Art, “It’s been such a great experience to show my film to a wider audience and to meet new people who have responded so positively to it. Winning this prize will really help me develop my new work and allow me to have peace of mind. I am very grateful and excited to have been given this opportunity.”

The ‘New Sensations’ exhibition is coinciding with Frieze Week in London, the exhibition is offering what it describes as ‘an unparalleled opportunity to see the most exciting emerging art from across the U.K. In addition to works by the 25 shortlisted artists, 3 new works commissioned by Absolut and made by Felicity Hammond, Emily Motto, and Jessica Ramm are also on view.’
