SUPERMARKET, the international artist-run art fair opened to the public this weekend in Stockholm with a variety of Galleries and artist led initiatives showing their wares to the public. The fair regularly attracts an international group of galleries producing exciting and innovative work from countries as far away as Canada, South Africa and the Middle East. This is not your typical traditional art fair where work is uniformly hung on the walls, Supermarket provides a showcase for artists’ initiatives from all over the world creating opportunities to open new networks and for Scandinavian artists to meet with other like-minded artists from around the globe.
The exhibitors are generally not-for-profit organisations. In addition to the exhibition, the event includes a seminar programme, a performance art stage and a meeting programme for networking. Of special note this year is Candyland and Daily Temporary Stockholm, Moseolaboratorio From Citta Sant Angelo Italy showing Photography, drawings and figurative installation. Ed Video form Canada featuring Video Art and an interesting Tim Horton paper coffee cup created by Gabriel Parniak in beads, Artellewa from Egypt showing paintings and photography, Paper Manchester with a number of small works mostly (yes, you guessed it) on paper, Allartnow, from Damascus Syria and Qwerty Odense from Denmark and Berlin who recreated an actual Real Estate agency selling art.
The fair is gaining in reputation every year and I think this years edition was the strongest. If you are more interested in the project spaces attached to the bigger fairs such as Art Basel and Frieze you will understand exactly what Supermarket is all about. As for next year…I’ll be there!
