A response to the artist Edward Burra (a collaborative show) including works by John Banting, Edward Burra, James Dearlove, David Lock, Graham Martin, Paul Nash, David Surman, Geraldine Swayne and Gerry White.
The starting point for the exhibition was the book ‘Well Dearie: The letters of Edward Burra’ which is a collection of his writings with his circle of lifelong friends he met whilst art students at Chelsea School of Art, Billy Chappel, Freddie Ashton, Barbara Ker-Seymer et al.
The exhibition will include paintings and prints by Edward Burra (1905-1976). It will also include small works by Burra’s friends John Banting and Paul Nash which belong to Rye Art Gallery’s collection. The gallery has also commissioned some miniature works by an artist in residence John Wiltshire which responds to Burra’s archive.
The exhibition will be in Gallery’s 4 and 5. Gallery 5 will feature a smaller focused exhibition ‘B is for Burra’ featuring miniature works commissioned by artist in residence at Rye, John Wiltshire, which responds to Burra’s archive.
