Turner Prize-winning architecture collective Assemble create a new work for the annual Whitechapel Gallery Children’s Commission.
For the commission, titled Brickfield, the group explore one of the city’s most important structural components: bricks. Developed with the Granby Workshop, a community-led social enterprise, the installation features fired and unfired bricks and handmade products.
Assemble are interested in self-organisation, improvisation and chance, the roles they play in the development of the built environment, and the ways that collective action can bring about positive change. Alongside the Children’s Commission, Assemble and the Whitechapel Gallery are working with local groups to learn about the connections between clay and the history of east London.
