What are the challenges for image use and image-making in a world where the image is ubiquitous?
In recent years, the internet has visually ‘educated’ people to a remarkable extent, to the point of image overload – so many images available and so little time to engage with them.
In today’s digital culture, where everyone can use anyone else’s images and make of them what they please, there are many issues to consider and explore, for both artists and educators in art and design. Can we have faith in the image as a document? What are the implications for copyright, creativity and education? Does the unfettered use of other’s images confirm the ideas of the re-appropriation artists of the 1980s or have we moved beyond what could have been imagined in the pre-digital era?
Who now owns the image? And does it matter?
