DRAF Curators’ Series 11: Jiro Takumatsu, Hi Red Center, Hirata Minoru, Kim Ku Lim

DRAF Institutue of Asian Performance Art

Jiro Takumatsu, Hi Red Center, Hirata Minoru, Kim Ku Lim

For the 11th edition of DRAF Curators’ Series, guest curator Victor Wang launches the Institute of Asian Performance Art (IAPA), an international network to deepen the awareness and understanding of the history of early performance art in Japan, Korea, China and Taiwan.

Wang reconsiders the format of the Curators’ Series from an exhibition to a speculative institute.  Three platforms connect the discipline and study of early East Asian performance art: Exhibition Case Studies, Classes and a Course Reader.  They address and examine these diverse histories, which are often marginalised in the curriculum of universities and the collections of public institutions and consider different ways to present and engage with them.  The project investigates the trans-national connections and dialogues within the region, mapping the interconnected individuals and collectives.

A new exhibition brings together works from 1960s and 70s Japan and Korea. It includes sculptures and works on paper by the late influential artists Jiro Takamatsu. Documentation of performances by Hi Red Center at the 1962 Yamanote Line Festival, one of the influential collective’s first events, by photographer Minoru Hirata, which capture key performances and events during the 1960s and 70s across public spaces. Kim Ku Lim re-stages his 1974 work Wiping Cloth for his first UK performance alongside archival material and documentation from his early performance works.
