This online exhibition brings together ten artists with diverse styles. Through the themes explored, we invite you to question your preconceptions of ‘mental illness’.
Multiple factors contribute to human distress. Often people’s ‘symptoms’ are seen in isolation but when viewed in the context of abuse, inequality, oppression, trauma, stigma and socioeconomic deprivation, these ‘symptoms’ make perfect sense. People are pathologized and sent on their way, or worse, forcibly treated, consolidating existing trauma. For many, the underlying causes remain unacknowledged and unaddressed.
Sometimes a diagnosis does more harm than good. ‘Psychosis’ can be a deeply important, meaningful and profound experience.
Through the exploration of these and other themes, this exhibition aims to take you on a journey, perhaps gaining a new perspective.
There are many ways to heal. Expression through the arts provides solace, therapy and gives people a voice and a way of expressing truths that otherwise remain hidden from wider society.
