Every Day is a New Day

Every day is a new day Phyllida Barlow Turner Contemporary

Every Day is a New Day brings together works by British sculptor Phyllida Barlow, British-Kenyan painter Michael Armitage and JMW Turner with artwork by young people from Kent and Africa. Turner Contemporary will become a space for making, discussion and exchange, whilst outside primary school children are transforming neglected sites in the town, as part of their unique Art Inspiring Change programme.

ARTIST ROOMS: Phyllida Barlow

For 5 decades Phyllida Barlow has been making playful, large-scale sculptures that physically transform gallery spaces, using everyday materials such as plywood, cement, plasterboard. This exhibition brings together works from the ARTIST ROOMS collection alongside other sculptures and a selection of drawings from throughout her career.

Michael Armitage: Peace Coma

A series of new and recent works by Michael Armitage – incidentally a former pupil of Barlow’s at the Slade School of Art – will be shown for the first time in a public gallery in his exhibition Peace Coma. Playing on Western art history’s treatment of places that are seen as ‘other’  and drawing on personal and collective memories of life in Kenya, as well as news and images circulating online, his paintings challenge social attitudes and inequalities.

Portfolio & The Mask Prize

To celebrate its 10th anniversary the gallery  is pairing Portfolio, the annual schools competition, with The Mask Prize, a creativity prize for young Africans. The shared theme for both competitions is Making a Change. Portfolio is Turner Contemporary and Canterbury Christ Church University’s annual art competition celebrating the creative talent of students and teachers from across Kent and Medway. The MASK Prize has been pioneered by the MASK School for Creativity and strengthens the creativity of young people leading to better employment. Celebrating its 5th anniversary, it is open to young people under 25 living in Africa and people of African origin living outside the continent.

Art Inspiring Change

At the same time, 80 primary school children will take the lead by transforming neglected sites in Margate this July after 18 months of work with local politicians, council officers, a Philosopher, Turner Contemporary’s learning team and their chosen artist. Art Inspiring Change, is designed to inspire continuous renewal, by harnessing children’s leadership and connecting the community with arts and culture to bring about positive change.
