Francisca Benitez | Oro Dulce

Filmarmalade is proud to present a screening of Francisca Benitez’s Oro Dulce. Last year Benitez joined the annual quince paste making activities of her family in Chile. Her very personal immersion in this form of artisanal agrarian production inspired her to contrast the promotion of such small-scale rural modes of production with the emergence of a globalized culture in Chile with historical debates around land reform.

The resultant film, Oro Dulce, patiently follows each step in the making of quince paste and shows the intimate relationship many generations of her family have to the process set against a backdrop of the Chilean forest.

The event will also include a discussion with Francisca Benitez and Gordon Shrigley, founder of Filmarmalade, and live musical accompaniment by David Maric and Cam Deas.

Francisca Benitez is an artist born in Santiago, Chile, in 1974. She has lived and works in New York since 1998. Benitez graduated as an architect from the University of Chile in 1998, and Master in Fine Arts from Hunter College CUNY in 2007. Her work has been exhibited in the Americas, Europe and Asia, most recently at El Museo del Barrio (New York, US), Die ecke (Santiago, Chile), Museum of Contemporary Art of the University of Sao Paulo (Sao Paulo, Brazil), CCCB (Barcelona, Spain) and Parc de la Villette (Paris, France). She is currently in London undertaking a residency at Gasworks, with the support of the AMA Foundation, Chile.

Filmarmalade is a publisher and DVD label specialising in contemporary artists’ film and video works. Every year Filmarmalade publish a series of works, selected through both invited and open submission, with the aim of encouraging wider access to the moving image. Filmarmalade also specially commission interviews to accompany each publication to provide a greater understanding of how video and film artists situate their work in relation to the history of art and contemporary fine art practice. Filmarmalade is a project by the artist Gordon Shrigley. The entire Filmarmalade collection is now held at the British Artists’ Film & Video Study Collection.
