Frieze Sculpture 2020

Frieze Sculpture 2020

Frieze Sculpture returns to The Regent’s Park from 5 – 18 October this year, featuring 12 ambitious works by leading international artists throughout the park’s English Gardens. Frieze Sculpture will be presented as part of an expanded Frieze Week programme of activity throughout London and coincides with Frieze London and Frieze Masters, which this year introduce a new hybrid format of online and offline activity.

Selected and placed by curator Clare Lilley (Director of Programme, Yorkshire Sculpture Park), the 2020 line-up features artists David Altmejd, Fabio Lattanzi Antinori, Gianpietro Carlesso, Eric Fischl, Patrick Goddard, Lubaina Himid, Kalliopi Lemos, Richard Long, Sarah Lucas, Gavin Turk, Rebecca Warren and Arne Quinze.

Adapted in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Frieze Sculpture 2020 will facilitate ambitious sculptural projects, despite the myriad challenges facing artists working in the medium in this moment. In keeping with the programme’s history of supporting new commissions, the display will feature new works from Patrick Goddard, Kalliopi Lemos and Arne Quinze, alongside a recent commission by Lubaina Himid, created for the 2019 High Line in New York, and exhibited for the first time in the UK.

This year’s selection of works touch on a range of timely themes, including civil rights, ecology, and the role of the artist as disruptor. Works by Lubaina Himid and Kalliopi Lemos explore issues around equality and art as a catalyst for change, while Patrick Goddard, Richard Long and Arne Quinze underscore the importance of our relationship to the natural world.

Exhibited in an open-air setting, Frieze Sculpture will give audiences the opportunity to enjoy significant works while observing social distancing orders. Frieze Sculpture is accompanied by a free audio tour by curator Clare Lilley. The display will also have a virtual presence on Frieze Viewing Room, allowing viewers from across the globe to view and engage with the works.
