Visitors to the MA Fine Art Show will have the opportunity to experience works of exceptional quality within the atmospheric exhibiting environment of traditional Victorian studios and Georgian buildings, now linked with a new contemporary entrance foyer designed by Alan Higgs Architects.
The exhibition will feature the work of 15 MA graduates, 5 interim students and 3 Artists in Residence developed out of the traditions of painting, sculpture, drawing and printmaking.
The bold nature and high quality contemporary work produced by this year’s students continues to position the Art School’s MA graduates amongst the highlights of London’s postgraduate fine art community, celebrating individual dedication to research and the merging of the traditions of making with new materials, ideas and possibilities, resulting in innovative and engaging contemporary art practices.
Out of the traditions of materials and making comes a contemporary twist on a Celtic bronze cast helmet blurring lines of the artefact and the ‘art’ object, figurative paintings of unsettling observations of social media, the on-going conversation concerned with the history of painting in the form of large mural scale works on discarded cardboard. These are juxtaposed in a show space against a 3m x 3m blow up ‘bouncy’ castle with no entrance, digitally camouflaged, contradicting its physical playful presence with the virtual origins of its digital ornamentation. Sound, movement and diagrams stretch the traditions into areas of performance, playfulness and possibility through a series of kinetic ‘confused’ machines. In this year’s show it is easy to see an approach to the making of contemporary work that embraces the global with the intimate in the production of fascinating moments of discovery.
You will also get the chance to view the exhibition of work produced by this year’s Artist in Residence Alex Frost as well as work by two Print Fellows, Blaze Cyan and Ed Adlington.
The MA Fine Art Show will be on display during the Art School’s participation in Open House London, on Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 September.
