Controversial, previously unseen shots of Lindsay Lohan taken by hot young Hollywood’s favourite photographer Tyler Shields will be shown in London for the first time this October during Frieze week as part of a collaborative exhibition with artist Maximilian Wiedemann.
Tyler Shields is known for his work with elite young Hollywood, including the stars of Glee, Mad Men and Twilight. His blood-bath and porn star pictures of Lohan were taken around the time of her court appearance earlier this year, which Lohan was forced to publicly defend herself, claiming the images were ‘art.’ Wiedemann and Shields’ collaboration with photographs of Lohan will explore society’s harmful manipulation of celebrity for money and the stinging consequences of it.
Wiedemann, whose recent portrait of Elle MacPherson made the front cover of The Big Issue, is famous for turning culturally iconic images or brands on their heads. American excess, society’s obsession with celebrity and the brash side of popular culture are all central themes in his work. His talent lies in giving audiences his own original perspective on current issues and individuals and creating works which contain more truth than the original image, along with his own brand of wry humour and subversion.
Wiedemann is based in London and is represented by Imitate Modern Gallery exclusively in the UK. He has had sell-out shows in Paris and New York and is also represented in Berlin and LA, where his profile is rapidly building. His recent campaign for VH1’s Divas has afforded him the chance to paint Adele and Leona Lewis amongst other celebrities, cementing his status as a key player in the artistic portrayal of celebrity culture and society’s relationship with it.
Tyler Shields has stirred up controversy with over sixty shoots that he has done with Lohan. His fearless approach has seen Shields and three musicians arrested for a photographic shoot where the pop stars were almost dangling off a bridge whilst some of his other work is controversial enough to be branded illegal by over a dozen countries around the world. www.tylershields.com
