Peter Clossick: Retroactive

Peter Clossick The Cello Factory

Retroactive presents a small selection of contemporary painting and drawing, from 1980 to 2019, showing works that respond to a complex world. The Cello Factory provides the site for an exposition of the human form in opaque impasto while continually seeking the journey within.

Born in 1948 and growing up in post-war inner London during the 1950s left an intrigue into Existential philosophy that has never subsided. Connecting with what is perhaps the most basic sense of all, a tactile sensation leading from the visual image that reaches out to the viewer. Not Cartesian perfect but approximate, the unutterable and inarticulate cry from within. The work aims to appeal to those who contemplate their own inner thoughts.

This is a quest for essence with idiosyncratic skill, bringing to light a textural physicality. Paintings are carved from passionate and intense multi-layers amassed upon the canvas, quite literally works of substance giving accessibility through a sense of touch rendering a dynamic immediacy. The formal process being one of the continual act of drawing, whether in charcoal, pen or paint, working from direct perception to arrive ultimately at a metaphoric interpretation.
