Exploring the ideas of indeterminacy and spontaneity, Butler’s practice is based on processes that emphasise the contingent character inherent to the act of creating. Composed of oil paint, chalk, dust collected debris and sometimes residue from previous projects, his pieces can be regarded as performative paintings, in which the notions of chance and accident play a significant role. Oscillating between the artistic intention and the unpredictable outcome, Butler’s work unveils the studio as a site of infinite creation, at once magical and terribly banal.
