Sestina, an exhibition at Doomed gallery from 19th June 2014, brings six London-based artists together for the first time. The presented works include photography, video, textile installations, and printmaking. The last decade within contemporary art has raised questions and renewed interest towards objects and materiality. This exhibition is an exploration of materiality within the photographic, looking at the in-between spaces, examining the poetic, the difference between the imagined and the real. Photography has always had an uncanny ability to borrow from other disciplines; this exhibition brings together the physical object, the print, questioning the notion of reproducibility with techniques that eliminate photographyʼs primary ability to replicate.
From work that looks at ruins of housing that remind us of a past, now lying in pieces and simultaneously a utopian dream of the future, or the collapse of present culture, to reintegrating the handmade with the use of cyanotypes, printmaking and solarisation, through labour intensive methods. The exhibition is a collaborative exploration of the material through abstract methods, alternative and analogue processes.
