States of Existence

An exhibition to coincide with World Mental Health Day on 10 October 2019. Curated by Tugba Tirpan and Sophie Akehurst. This exhibition will showcase transitory works from humans who express themselves through art to convey life’s difficulties.

The exhibition focuses on the diverse and individual experiences of mental health through artistic expression.  This could be; physical, mental, emotional, social, spiritual, racial or financial adversity. Breaking the stigma is challenging in this binary narrative of normal/abnormal, healthy/unhealthy, well/unwell and what that means to the individual.

The exhibition is a result of an Open call out for submissions of Art in all forms, poetry, performance art, sketches, visual expressions showing the impact of mental health through different states of existence.

The aim is to create a visually stimulating, thought-provoking, inclusive and engaging event that ignites discussion, tackles stigma and unites artist and audience.

Art can be the most comfortable way to communicate experiences of mental health. Art offers the opportunity to express oneself and can challenge the stigma attached to mental health as well as having a positive impact on one’s mental and physical wellbeing.
