Surface Tension

The NFT Gallery

Just as surface tension allows objects with a higher density than liquid to rest on its surface without becoming even partly submerged, humankind have been using masks as impenetrable veneer through the end of times. The mask, whether utilised as a physical barrier or disguise, allows the wearer to behave in unexpected ways, or as they wouldn’t permit themselves to without it. As the mask allows for all kinds of worldliness with hidden, or not so hidden messages, the viewer is left, either seduced by the mask’s beauty, or disturbed by the unpleasantness it creates, with attention being diverted from what lies underneath.

As in the art world, women in the NFT sphere are underrepresented, both as artists and collectors. For the inaugural show , The NFT Gallery  is presenting a strong group of female artists working in both arenas. By collaborating with traditional artists to create NFTs and exhibiting them alongside the work of already established NFT artists, the gallery aims to unmask the mystique around NFTs, all the while educating each other.

Paulina Almira, Silia Ka Tung and Postwook create their own worlds and narratives to help make sense of our own. Their colourful and playful imagery create a veil, drawing us in to discover the darker inner workings of the mind. Conversely, Sarah Meyohas unmasks systems and technologies through her visual language; Bitchcoin, a cryptocurrency backed by physical artworks, questioning the speculative value of cryptocurrency and the ineffable value of art. Aitana Basquiat works with the motif of a sculptural human bust, exploring a surrealist vision of what may be going on inside, whilst Rebel Society’s virtual portraits of imagined women with their faces disguised by makeup, have the strength to stick two fingers up to the patriarchy.
