Artist Natalie Kay has teamed up with Matt Jones of VC Jones of Whitstable: Fish Restaurant and Takeaway to produce a special artwork in celebration of their 50th year trading at the heart of the community.
Throughout the anniversary year, Natalie has regularly visited the popular eatery to make onsite observational drawings of the staff, local patrons and day-trippers, with further sketches acknowledging the venue’s interior and frontage, sea-front suppliers and local hot-spots. These site-specific works have now been combined to create a new limited edition ‘chip shop paper’ to be launched in alongside the Whitstable Oyster Festival from shop opening on 27 July 2013 and remain in distribution whilst stocks last, free to customers purchasing a takeaway meal and as collectable restaurant place mats.
I am delighted to have been given this opportunity to collaborate with the VC Jones team and hope that anyone viewing the artworks will recognise their relationship to the building and equally stand a good chance of sighting themselves one of the many instances captured – whether the restaurant or in town, and with this take a moment to reflect upon, perhaps share with friends, their own part in the unfolding story of VC Jones of Whitstable and the wider community – Natalie Kay 2013
